Summer Schools

I have worked at schools in Hastings, Canterbury, and in the Sussex countryside. All had good and bad points the best recommendations would be from friends or other students who have been, learnt alot and had good experiences. if you have any recomendations please email me and I may include them here.

When choosing a school think about the following:

Location

Is the place full of people who speak your language and not English. Many of the schools and towns on the south coast of England and in big cities such as London have more Spanish or Italians in the summer months than English speaker. Find a location that is not so well known a little extra time travelling may make for a much better learning experience. I would not recommend south coast or London in the summer. Try moving to the west i.e. cornwall or devon or move north away from the seaside. York is a nice city also places in Ireland Wales or Scotland can be very nice. Don't worry about the local accents if you are a non-native it won't be a problem.

Accomodation

Host family, student residence, just a bed and breakfast or hotel. A good host family would be the best but this is harder to find in the most popular areas where they may have had many students staying with them. The student residence could be a better option especially where there is a mix of nationalites and students would have to speak english to communicate with each other. Hotels or B&B can be O.K if you can meet and talk to other guests. But are not for children.

The programme and facilities

A good programme of afternoon activities, sports, games, drama is better than long all day classes or coach excursions to tourist sights. Here English will be used to work with other students or staff. As better staff and facilities are required only the more serious schools will provide these types of activities. Remember no-one can learn well if they don't enjoy what they are doing.
